Financial Statement Analysis

Accounting information is a critical instrument in presenting a corporation's financial picture to external and internal groups or users for the sole purpose of enhancing the decision making process. The unit explains the construction of accounting information in accordance with International Accounting Standards (IAS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and thereafter within each section, the analysis and interpretation. It thereby encourages a critical rather than automatic acceptance of the underlying assumptions behind accounting. It links theory with practical examples and case studies based upon real life business situations in service, retail and manufacturing industries and trains future managers to read behind accounting data so as to create and maintain a sustainable competitive advantage for their company whilst complying with IAS and IFRS.

The unit leader for this module is Mrs Panagiota Skoulariki, from the international facultu of the University of Sheffield, CITY College, whose areas of specialization are International Financial Reporting Standards, Auditing, Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics, Financial Statements Analysis and Corporate Finance. Mrs Skoulariki comes from an accounting and auditing professional and business background, practiced mainly in South Africa. Prior teaching experience included the creation of a nation wide voluntary teaching programme aimed at disadvantaged accounting students living in the ghettos of South Africa. She was also a member of the freedom movement against the then apartheid regime of South Africa, her work interalia involving organising international press conferences and preparing reports for submission to the United Nations and other special commissions.
